Make Sure Your Contractor Does These 4 Things
Whether your shower is humble or humongous, Nova Custom Glass can design and install a beautiful frameless glass shower in your home. We’re sharing four things you need to ensure your contractor is doing during your upcoming custom glass shower design and installation.
Structural Reinforcement
If you’re planning to hang heavy frameless glass doors for your shower, make sure your contractor uses plenty of wood studs in the walls where custom glass doors will be mounted. Usually, a single 2×4 is sufficient, but a double 2×4 is the preferred option as it will provide much more support over time. Remember to offer wood studs or blocking where door hinges or panels will be anchored, mainly when metal studs are part of the wall’s original construction.
Shower Curbs, Benches, Or Half Walls
If you’re considering adding a curb or bench to your shower design, ensure your contractor adds an adequate slope on the top of the curb or bench so that these surfaces will drain adequately. The curb or lip around the shower base should be slightly slanted inward at a 5-degree "pitch" or slope so water flows in toward the drain. Horizontal surfaces that have no pitch will result in water leakage and runoff.
Use Solid Surface Materials For Horizontal Surfaces
If you want a contemporary look made of durable, almost non-porous material, easy to maintain, have your contractor source solid surface materials. You can use solid surface materials for nearly anything you can imagine and with a manageable budget as well! Single slabs of marble, quartz, or granite should be used on the tops of all horizontal surfaces such as curbs, benches, or half walls. These are much easier to keep clean than pieces of tile and grout lines and will facilitate drainage while minimizing maintenance.
Ventilation
When it comes to ventilation, make sure your contractor gets the most efficient exhaust fan available for your budget. Have your contractor position it as close to the shower enclosure as possible to extract steam from the shower enclosure correctly. This is especially important in showers where tile does not go all the way up to the ceiling, as more painted drywall surface equals more opportunity for potential mold to grow.
